SEDATION DENTISTRY SERVICES IN OTTAWA

At Preston Dental Centre, we understand that dental anxiety or discomfort can make certain procedures challenging. That’s why we offer semi-conscious sedation, also known as moderate sedation, to help patients feel calm and relaxed while staying awake throughout their treatment. This innovative solution allows you to undergo dental procedures comfortably, with minimal memory of the experience.

Semi-conscious sedation is a form of anesthesia that places patients in a deeply relaxed state without putting them to sleep. While you remain awake and responsive, the sedation helps you feel calm and at ease. This is especially beneficial for patients with dental anxiety or those undergoing complex procedures.

Contact us today to learn more about semi-conscious sedation and how it can improve your dental experience.

HOW DOES SEMI-CONSCIOUS SEDATION WORK?

Unlike general anesthesia which puts the patient into a deep sleep, semi-conscious sedation allows the patient to remain alert but in a relaced state.

Sedation works by supressing the central nervous system to reduce pain perception, alleviate anxiety, and create a sense of calm. While the patient remains conscious they may experience some drowsiness.

Sedative medications are typically administered through:

Oral Sedation

Pills or liquids taken by mouth prior to the procedure.

Intravenous Sedation (IV sedation)

Medication delivered directly into the bloodstream for faster onset and more controlled effects

Inhalation Sedation

Nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) is inhaled, inducing a relaxed and euphoric feeling.

BENEFITS OF SEMI-CONSCIOUS SEDATION

Semi-conscious sedation offers a unique blend of comfort, safety, and efficiency, making it an excellent choice for patients seeking a stress-free dental experience.

Comfort and Relaxation: helps patients feel relaxed and at ease during procedures that may otherwise cause discomfort or anxiety.

Awake and Responsive: patients can respond to instructions or questions from the medical team, making communication easy.

Rapid recovery: the effects of sedation wear off quickly, allowing patients to recover faster than with general anesthesia.

Reduced anxiety: ideal for individuals with a fear of medical or dental procedures

Safety: there is minimal risk involved compared to general anesthesia.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE PROCEDURE?

Pre-Sedation

Before the procedure your healthcare provider will discuss your medical history, any medications you are taking, and your sedation options with you. They will then administer the appropriate sedative.

Sedation Induction

Whether administered orally, via IV, or through inhalation the sedation will take effect in a few minutes. You may feel drowsy, calm or euphoric.

During the Procedure

While sedated you will remain conscious and able to respond to the doctor’s instructions. The procedure itself will proceed while you feel relaxed or even “disconnected” from the experience.

Post Procedure

After the procedure you will be monitored until the sedation wears off. You may feel slightly groggy or tired for a short time, but most patients recover within an hour.
