Dental Implant Surgery – What To Expect

‹ BACK TO BLOG

Dental Examination

Dental implant surgery is a common and effective solution for replacing missing teeth. At Preston Dental Centre, we help patients restore their smile and confidence using durable, natural-looking dental implants. Whether you’re replacing one tooth or several, understanding the process can help ease anxiety and ensure a smooth recovery.

The Dental Implant Surgery Process

There might be variations depending on the specific needs of the patient but the general process of the surgery takes place in three stages.

Placing The Implant

The area in question is numbed with an anesthetic (usually a local one unless the situation calls for a general anesthetic). After the drug takes effect, the dentist uses an incision in the gums to expose the jaw bone. Then a drill is used to make an opening for the implant’s base. After the implant is in place, the gum incision is stitched up if necessary.

Attaching The Abutment

In a few months, the implant will fuse to the jaw bone and heal. Then the dentist can proceed with the next stage. They will expose the implant with another incision to place the abutment on the base and take impressions for the crown.

Fitting The Crown

This step will take several appointments to get the right look and fit for your teeth and meet the dentist’s specifications. A trial procedure may be necessary to allow the dentist to ensure that the process is successful.

When complete, the implant will look indistinguishable from other teeth in the patient’s mouth.

Recovery After The Dental Implant Surgery

Recovery times vary depending on how many implants are placed and whether bone grafting was needed. Most patients experience mild swelling or discomfort for a few days, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief, ice packs, and rest.

To support healing:

  • Stick to soft foods for the first few days

  • Avoid smoking or drinking through a straw

  • Brush gently around the implant site

  • Follow all aftercare instructions from your dentist

Regular follow-up appointments are scheduled to ensure your implant is healing properly. Most patients return to normal routines quickly, and full healing may take several months.

Preston Dental Centre – Keep On Smiling

Dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution for missing teeth. With proper care, including daily brushing, flossing, and routine dental checkups, implants can last for 15 years or more.

Unlike dentures, implants are fixed in place and allow you to eat, speak, and smile with complete confidence.

Please contact us if you need any dental health care procedures. Preston Dental Centre prides itself on using a patient-centered approach to guarantee the best possible results. Our staff will make sure you are as comfortable as possible for every appointment, giving you the care you need and the smile you deserve.
